So it seems like lately I keep hearing from people about how hair extensions damage hair. And It has irritated me enough, that I've decided to write this post for anyone who is concerned about this.
Hair extensions should not damage your hair.
Ok, I just had to get that out there.
So many people will say that hair extensions damaged their hair because they truly don't know any better, and I completely understand that! Clients rely on our expertise, and trust that we are professionals who know what we are doing. Sadly, this is just not always the case.
Here are a few reasons people believe hair extensions cause damage:
1. They were not installed correctly.
It may seem like a simple process to most people, but there is so much to learn about the process and different methods of installation. In order to have a successful installation, we as stylists must be extremely meticulous, and very neat when installing extensions. If we are off by even a centimeter or two, it can create too much tension on the hair and cause breakage.
2. Improper maintenance and care.
It is very important to maintain hair extensions. Every company has their own suggestions, but in general you need to brush them root to tip twice a day with an extension brush, wrap the hair in a bun or braid at night, keep them deep conditioned, don't use too much tension when brushing or styling, etc. It is important to take care of the extensions, and to be very gentle with them.
3. Improperly removing extensions
Every method of extensions has a different method of removal. Stylists must use the proper tools or products to remove the bonds. It is important to have patience with the process and to be gentle with the hair.
I have worn extensions on and off for about 6 years now and my hair has never been damaged from the extensions. I took great care of them each time, and my hair was actually longer and healthier each time they were removed. The extensions actually protected my hair from getting as much heat damage from styling.
I have hair extensions installed properly and I've had them installed improperly a couple times. Let me tell you, there is a night and day difference!!!!
Improperly installed, you will feel a lot of discomfort, and you'll probably feel like your hair is being damaged. Extensions that are installed correctly shouldn't hurt at all!! They may be a little sore for a day or two, but never painful!
I hope this helped if you were thinking of trying extensions but were nervous about damage. Please feel to reach out to me if you have any questions! I'd be happy to help in any way I can!
